10:12 am - Robot and Boy
blegger badger! queen mother of all badgers

The last time I did a whole week of comics I felt like I'd been run over by a wheelbarrow. For no particular reason. Today I feel... good. Interesting! I hope you feel good about these comics too.

oh....

It is Canada Day. In Toronto we celebrate by not picking up our garbage. I hope, wherever you are, your Canada Day celebrations are at least equal to that.

12:36 pm - Robot and Boy
boy, you are so selfish

Sorry about the delay! I had to spend the morning wrestling with Photoshop. You know how it is. Wrestling with a computer program. Getting covered in bytes and whatever. One's and O's dripping down your body like sweat, your chest panting and heaving as you navigate the mouse through the correct sequence of option menus...

Wait-- you don't? Hmm... I shouldn't have typed any of those words.

Anyway, it turns out I have more Robot and Boys kicking around here than I thought! Let's see about doing a month of these guys. That will be fun.

10:39 am - Always Comix Submission
A while ago I submitted a comic to the "How We Met" issue of Always Comix, and over the weekend I found out that I didn't make the cut! While this is unfortunate, they did say some very nice things about the comic in general and apparently they received more submissions than ever so I expect competition was extremely high.

My loss, however, is your gain! Here is that turned down comic. I've got some other Robot and Boys kicking around so we'll do this for at least a week, and after that maybe we'll keep going to build a fine head of "steam".

You know how they said don't title your submission with the theme? I didn't do that. I think I saw that after. Poor form!

Also, do you like blogs? I have a blog that I've been updating for a while. I think it is a pretty good blog, you know, for a blog. I mention it now only because I made it look a little bit nicer over the weekend. Check it out if that is your thing (if your thing is blogs).

The rest of this comic is a made-for-TV movie that will air on ABC next Sunday. Check it out if you can.

09:41 pm - Newsie Boy

This comic was actually the basis for a musical in the early nineties. I just never posted it until now.

This is what I see when I close my eyes. It's kind of frightening.

09:31 pm - Robot and Pharoah

I had kind of a bad day today. I am posting four comics in a row to make up for that. Sorry if you are not down. Sometimes a man just has to do certain things.

10:36 am - Canzine Comics

There are a lot of things I haven't posted, I guess. These are from a very long time ago. Last Canzine I shared a table selling some little books that were not comics-related. But we got there late (it was our first time) and found ourselves in this weird and out of the way back room. So I started putting up these little tiny advertisements below in the hope that they would bring people in. I am not sure if they worked, but they were fun to make. They are all comics (pretty false advertising) and they are under the cut.

Anyway, it was slow for a lot of the day so I started selling "custom comics" for a dollar. These are above. The first one was just an example, and the second one was paid for but it was getting near the end of Canzine and the person who bought it just disappeared. That's cool. I can show it to you guys. It's there. Maybe you already read it? I couldn't remember Mabel's name, that's why she's called Rex.

Something else I meant to post about after Canzine was Phil McAndrew's Are You Man Enough?. I'd read it online already but let me tell you something, it is definitely worth reading in real life, without the "brain frost" that comes with the internet. The drawings bring laughs in any circumstance. I am not kidding. His website says it is sold out, but I think he is thinking of doing another print? I'm pretty sure if you're reading this you probably already know all about him, maybe you have twelve copies, but if not let him know you want him to do a reprint. That would be a nice thing to do, maybe.

10:18 am - The Time Travel Ghost

This was originally going to be part of a mini-comic I was doing with [info]kingthunder. I don't know if we are still doing that? It doesn't matter. Anyway! I liked this page so I thought I would post it finally (it is the only page in existence). Coincidentally Marcel from [info]napcomics and I are working on a minicomic for Canzine this year and it also involves the Time Travel Ghost. So get ready for that.

Below are some Time Travel Ghost one-offs I did for fun, because comics are fun.

Two more over here. )

10:40 am - Canada Creation Myth
Ask anyone on the internet who the most Canadian "black-and-white-simple-line-style webcomic artist" is and they well jump up and down and scream "Kate Beaton" while running their hands through their hair and all over their face. That's... well, that's just how it is. Her comics are fantastic and everyone loves them. That is fact.

But! Who was first? Huh? Who was it? Was it you? I don't know, maybe. I'm not an Encyclopedia. But listen: let me tell you something. I was making Canadian black-and-white-simple-line-style web comics before Kate Beaton was even born*.

Look at how Canadian that is. And that was just the title page.

I was content to let bygones be bygones, because I thought (despite never, ever, talking to her) Beaton and I had some kind of uneasy, unspoken truce that she would never ever branch into the field of "vertically oriented, edgy Canadian black-and-white-simple-line-style webcomics" but with this recent guest comic for John Campbell she fired the first shot over the bow.

Anyway, the website where all of these were hosted (http://www.cacreamy.com) has been down for a couple years now, so I thought I'd post a selection of my favourites.

THEY ARE ALL HERE )

*assuming Kate Beaton was born in late 2005.

I think it is important not to get too excited by Obama's historic election win. I found this in my mailbox. It seems worth posting. It demonstrates that there is still a lot of work to be done.

In other news, Michael Crichton died. This makes me very sad

10:27 am - Monday, August 25th

I feel better about comics when I am not squeezing them out of my brain pustules. I don't even know where those are or what they do or if they even exist, but it was terrible trying to squeeze them out of there. It's not so much the 'work', it's thinking about where the comics are going to end up. Art Spiegleman talks about that in McSweeney's 27, his work is ruined or strained when he starts to think of something as 'product'.

It's just really hard to think of the things I post here as anything but. Maybe if I'm going to do comics I need to get a website without a comment system and 'locked-in' audience, I don't know.

10:46 am - Sunday, August 10th

I'm scaling this experiment back. A comic every day when I've got so many things on my plate... it's starting to wear me out. And the comics are getting pretty bad. So I'll be switching to Monday-Friday starting... now.

I did not mean for the 8th's entry to be even a little bit sexual. Just in case you're keeping score, guys.

10:27 am - Friday, August 8th

We went to the Taste of the Danforth festival in Toronto. My cousin was interested in the quail. I told him, from prior experience, that quail tasted "pretty good". He tried it. It was terrible. He did not like the quail. I tried it. It was bad, terrible quail. I did not like the quail.

also: ahhh-- ha-ha, ahhhhh... (more on this vague feeling later).

This, ahh. I was just messing around with the tablet, guys. And I'm at the library so I still got Friday's at home, not scanned. I'll get that going whenever the next time is that I am able to get these guys going again (Monday???).

Internet! Ever have one of those weeks where everything goes wrong? In terms of posting completed comics, that was my week. Anyway, this is, uh... I guess it is an example of bad character design? huh huh huh
